The monumental design of the Fanling Magistrates' Court Building marks the contemporary architectural style of court buildings of Hong Kong. Opened in July 2002, the 11-storey building is developed on a 4,800 sq m site for 9 courtrooms. The building is constructed in a symmetrical approach at the main entrance to build up an image of solemnity. The building enveloped with cladding in earthy granite and curtain walls is typically functional. Windows facing west and southwest are smaller and recessed from the external walls to reduce excessive heat gain/loss. The podium is designed as an open landscaped garden linking up with the pathways for public access. To create a green surrounding, planting strips along the emergency vehicular access and planting areas along the main road and in open space are provided. There are also sunken planter boxes on the landscaped podium, which is open to the public.
